I read that it's possible to cycle one way, catch a train back. Has anyone done that? Is it possible for any sections or the whole trail?

Yes. You can go one way between any stations served. BUT, there are only 4 places for bikes as baggage (in one car in place of seats), and you have to reserve a spot to be sure to be able to get your bike on ($10 extra).

That's what we did, and the train is a blast. Definitely recommend, we were shuttled from the trail in St. Charles to the Amtrak station in Kirkwood, then loaded our bikes and headed west. You can also catch the Amtrak downtown St. Louis: either will require a little advance planning. Luckily we have this web site to help us!!

Yes! We started in Sedalia and rode to Washington and caught the Amtrak there. It took 2.5 hours back to Sedalia in very comfortable train with wifi, a snack bar, outlets for electronics, etc. Cost was very affordable, with bikes being $10. Do know that you need to make reservations ahead of time and that there are only 4 spots for bikes on each train. And you do need to be able to load your own bike on the train. If you decide to go to St. Charles you will need to either ride or get a shuttle to Kirkwood train station which is maybe 15 or 20 miles from the trail. We chose Washington, but know that right now you have to ride across the narrow Washington Bridge (but the ped/bike bridge is under construction). Hermann has an Amtrak station and a bike/ped bridge. Jefferson City has a very cool bike/ped bridge and Amtrak Station.
