Hi, we are not familiar with this trail. My husband has a road bike and mine is closer to a mountain style ("comfort bike"). Will we be able to ride this trail without a flat tire on the way? We will only be going 40-50 miles of it. Which portion is recommended for this?

Yes. We've ridden Ultra Gatorskin 28's several times without issue. Stay in the track out loose chat and you'll be fine.

I live near the eastern end of the Katy. Around here it has a reputation for causing flat tires - very tiny thorns. I just got a flat this past weekend. Another example - I was in Sedalia several years ago and talked to a man who rode in from Jefferson City. He had 6 flats on his mountain bike in that distance. I'd recommend lots of tubes, a patch kit, or something like Slime (I personally think Flat Attack brand is better).

I've ridden hundreds of miles between Jefferson City and Sedalia for years and years on both hybrid and road tires and have never had a flat every 14 miles. I carry patches and have thrown away more than I've used because I periodically replace them with new just in case I need one.

If someone had 6 flats in 85 miles, I'd be inclined to believe that it was for other reasons that had absolutely nothing to do with the surface of the trail, especially if they were on a mountain bike which is overkill for the Katy.
