We are planning our first trip on the KT for late May. Is this a good time to ride the trail? What are the bugs like and is the weather OK for camping? We've ridden the GAP/C&O a few times so we have experience riding self contained trips. We are considering using Amtrak to shuttle out to the west end of the trail... any advice on this?

Late May would be a great time to ride the trail. The amount of bugs will be a factor of how wet of a spring it is. Weather-wise, I imagine you'll only be dodging rain, potentially, but that's true no matter what month you choose to ride. Amtrak will get you to Sedalia, which is 35 miles from the start in Clinton. You can then use a shuttle service (find them on this website) to take you to Clinton if it's important to start there. Keep in mind that Amtrak will only allow a maximum of 4 bikes on the train, so book & reserve early.

Any time is a good time to ride the KATY! To be clear, I ride the eastern end, but the trail and weather is similar on both ends. You should be early enough in the year that the bugs are not that bad, but as the previous comment noted, it will depend on the weather. The mosquitos are definitely worse when you are down by the river which I do not think will apply to the section your are riding. May is a nice time to be on the KATY and camping because it should be before the hot and humid weather sets in, but May can be wet, but not a lot more so than most spring or summer months. The only issue I ever have on the KATY is after rains/wet periods, the trail, in spots, can get mushy. Certainly not impassable, but you will work harder. Have a safe and fun trip!!!
