I am riding from Illinois and plan on crossing the Mississippi River at the Golden Eagle Ferry Aug 3 and jumping on the Katy Trail east of St Charles and riding to Rocheport by Friday Aug 5. I have been watching the radar and it looks like a lot of rain in eastern Missouri. Are there any known problems due to excessive rain on the Trail?

The trail dries off quickly in the summer. There may be washouts that cause ruts, but generally the only rain you need to worry about is what's falling on you and your gear. I would like to suggest, however, that you consider taking the Clark Bridge in Alton versus the ferry. The bridge is always "running" and has a nice bike lane. You do have to be a little careful for a couple miles when you get to the Missouri side because of traffic, but I find it to be a good, dependable way to get to the Katy.

Thanks for the reply. I am a little concerned about having to wait on the ferry, but I really want to bike between the rivers. I hear it is very scenic. Everyone I have talked to says the ferry runs regularly so I am going to give it a shot.

The Golden Eagle ferry is a nice way to cross the Mississippi River. Just take it slow going down the very steep hill especially when you get near the river or you could be taking a bath!

Where do you plan on crossing the Illinois River? If at Hardin, you may have to wait for the bridge to open as part of it rises up for barge traffic. If at Brussels, you'll have to wait a short while for the ferry there.

If you get on the Katy at Machens, part of the trail is washed out. It was walkable in June, but might actually be flooded now. Your idea of getting on just east of St. Charles is a good one.

I crossed the Illinois River at Kampsville on the ferry there. I am in Hartsburg at Dotties Cafe now. The trail is washed out in a lot of places between Mckittrick and Rhineland and also between Tebbets and North Jefferson. All passable but you have to really pay attention.

I agree the Golden Eagle Ferry was fun. I used google maps to get me to the Katy Trail and it put me on the Boschert Trail and then the Fox Hill Park Trail, so there was very little on street riding. It was fun!

I biked from Portland east to Rhineland today. That part of the trail was ok. As mentioned there have been wash outs, but I was able to ride the entire time, until Rhineland. There is an orange fence across the trail there that says trail closed due to flooding, and it had the mile markers, I think it was 101 to 104, but not positive. I didn't try it.
