Missouri State Parks reports trail closure due to flooding at mile markers 34-36, which is a few miles east/north of St Charles (toward Machens).

I have asked this before and have not read any opinions. Why does the park continue to pay for the reconstruction of this area year in and out instead of build around it along the levee.

jim from St Thomas on 4/30/2016 9:01:11 AM:
My guess is the levee is either privately owned or federally controlled.

frank from chesterfield on 4/30/2016 11:29:55 AM:
That makes sense. Wish there could be a better way then to have to rebuild every year.

jim from St Thomas on 4/30/2016 2:25:22 PM:
I agree Frank. Have no facts to back up my opinion but it seems like in the "old days" we used to have these floods every 5 - 10 years. Now it seems like they are almost every year. Like I said, I have no facts (It could be that "when I was a kid" thing that affects me more and more these days) but who knows.

I'm planning to ride from Alton, IL to St. Charles, MO, around June 19 (ish). Is the trail from Machens to St. Charles usually open by then? Also, is there a number I can call to get a definitive answer about whether that part of the trail is open before I choose that route?

It usually is; however a lot depends on the rains the week before. Worse come to worse, you could exit the trail at Wiedley Rd and ride in on Hwy 94. It is somewhat busy at times but does have an adequate shoulder most places.
