I know camping along the trail is not allowed, but can I risk stealth camping if we can't make the next camp ground?

I know what the speed limit is on the highway, but can I risk breaking the law to get to a trailhead in a more popular area in case I don't want to stop at one in a more remote area? I mean, for the sake of cycling, is it ok to break the law. It's not like I want to rob a store or something like that. All I want is the word that it's ok for me to break the law. What do you think??

No.

Additionally: I and many others will rat you out in a heartbeat. May the chiggers, snakes, and mosquitoes find you before the Park Rangers and the landowners with their shotguns do. Poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac to you.

Vern, the reason stealth camping is not allowed is because you would be on private property. Trespassing. Landowners don't like that. Do you want people camping in your yard? We are trying to gain support for the new Rock Island trail and the last thing we want is more ammunition for the naysayers. Trespassing is kind of a big issue on this.

You might try walking up to a nearby farmhouse and just asking if you could set up camp on their property near the trail. Might even get invited to a free home-cooked meal, or offered a clean shower or they might even invite you in to get away from the chiggers, cool off and sleep in their basement for several years. Never hurts to ask! Most folks are friendly to cyclists.
