Machens, Missouri on the Katy Trail

Mile 26.9

The Missouri DNR is working on extending the Katy Trail beyond St Charles, to Machens.  This will add another 13 miles to the eastern end of the Katy Trail. On October 30, 2006, the St Louis Post Dispatch published a story stating that all involved parties are nearing an agreement on finishing the trail to Machens.  And on February 8, 2007 they published another story with the state's announcement of plans for starting work should on the extension.

The St Louis Post Dispatch ran the following story on December 16, 2009, headlined Completion of Katy Trail segment is targeted for fall 2010:

ST. CHARLES COUNTY — A new target date of next fall has been set for the completion of long-delayed work on the eastern tip of the Katy Trail.

The project will complete the 11-mile segment connecting St. Charles and the Machens area to the northeast, between the Missouri and Mississippi rivers.

Judd Slivka, a spokesman for the state Department of Natural Resources, said the agency now hopes to begin the project in April and that it's expected to take about six months.

For years, state officials have wanted to take the trail to Machens, but the floods of 1993 and 1995 left two large areas of standing water on the trail.

After the state decided that building a bridge over one 600-foot gap would be too costly, other options were looked into. Putting part of the trail atop an existing levee was chosen.

The state first planned to do that work in 2007, but the completion date and others since then haven't been met because of budget and weather problems.

Slivka said state officials want to use federal economic stimulus funds sought by the state Department of Transportation for the project, which now has a price tag of about $655,000. A year ago, the state estimated the cost at $350,000.

Slivka said the earlier estimate was for state employees to do the work. He said current plans call for hiring private contractors and deploying state workers for other projects.

We'll keep the website updated with any new developments.

DNR statement:
The incomplete section from St. Charles to Machens is very important to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. Currently, construction is progressing on this section of the Katy Trail. However, there have been several legal issues involving the property rights and "right of ways" along this particular portion of the trail which have caused delays in its planning and construction. Many of these issues have been resolved, but there are several which remain. For that reason, we are unable to give you a completion date at this time. Please know that as soon as the legalities can be resolved, it is the intention of the department to finish the eastern section as quickly as possible.

I will be riding the trail west to east in a few weeks. Does anyone know if there was any
more progress on this portion of the trail? I noticed someone had remarked about it being
ridable in April but you had to deal with a grass surface(sometimes damp).... View Full Comment

Subject:  Machens extension May 2009?

Hi Folks...am planning a bike tour in mid-May from KC to STL, mostly on the Katy. I'd like to be able to traverse the entire state, so was wondering what condition the Machens extension is in at this point. Anyone tried to bike it lately? I'd rather not have to go with the convertible pants and can of bug juice technique to get it done. Thanks!

I'm planning a trail trip for early Sept. What do the experts think (Doug K?) is a reasonable number of miles to travel per day for a weekend trail rider? I'm crossing my fingers that the trail to Machens is finished by then.
