KT Alert Katy Trail News for February 21, 2005

Katy Trail info
February 21, 2005

Welcome to the KT Alert email, courtesy of www.BikeKatyTrail.com, keeping you updated on the Katy Trail.  If you do not wish to receive these emails, see removal instructions at the end of this message.

Usually these newsletters are a month or more apart.  However, I am rushing out this issue to make you aware of breaking news regarding the old Katy Railroad bridge in Boonville, for those of you who might want to take action.

Boonville Katy Bridge - Source: Boonville Daily News

If you've ridden the Katy Trail across the Missouri River in Boonville, you've undoubtedly noticed the unusual bridge just upstream (see photo above).  This is the old MKT railroad bridge, which is no longer used by the railroad - it's part of the former MKT rail line that is now the Katy Trail.

When the Katy Trail was built in Boonville, it was routed up to the hwy 40 bridge to cross the Missouri River.  But now there is an opportunity to use the historic railroad bridge as a pedestrian/cycling section of the Katy Trail.

A struggle is coming to a head between those who want to tear down the bridge, and those who want to preserve it and incorporate it into the Katy Trail.  Governor Blunt is expected to make the final decision this week, and your input could affect the fate of this bridge.

The Missouri Bicycle Federation has been on top of this issue, and this link on their website has details on how you can voice your opinion.  (http://www.mobikefed.org/2005_02_01_advocacyalertsarchive.html#110891858345250614)

The Boonville Daily News has several articles about the bridge and the controversy.  (http://www.boonvilledailynews.com/)

Thanks for listening.  The KT Alert newsletter will be back again in a month or so in the more familiar format, perhaps with details of the fate of the Boonville Katy Bridge.
