Hermann, Missouri near the Katy Trail

Across the Missouri River from McKittrick, mile 100.8
Population 2,674

Hermann is not directly on the Katy Trail, but it is less than 3 miles from the trail and a popular destination due to its charm and character.  This German-flavored town has numerous wineries, B&B's, antique shops, and other attractions.  And it hosts a fantastic Oktoberfest the first four weekends in October (look below for a full listing of Hermann Festivals).

Taking the Train

Amtrak's cross-Missouri route stops at Hermann, as well as a handful of other towns along the Katy Trail.  Bikes are allowed on this route, if arranged in advance.  See the Katy Trail Amtrak Guide for full details.

The Bridge

The old narrow bridge to Hermann has been replaced by a new bike-friendly and pedestrian-friendly bridge, so riding your bike from McKittrick to Hermann is not a big deal any more.  Just head south on highway 19 from McKittrick.  See the map on the McKittrick page, or move the map below north along 19.  You'll have to follow Main Street from the McKittrick trailhead up to the highway.  Total distance from McKittrick to Hermann is less than three miles.

However, for those who prefer not to ride off-trail, some of the local B&B's will give their guests a ride between Hermann and the McKittrick trailhead.  There is no pay phone at the McKittrick trailhead.  So if you need one of the Hermann inns to come pick you up at the trailhead, you'll either need to use a cell phone (if you can get a signal), or call from the pay phone at the gas station or Loutre Market, which you'll see to the south, across the fields from the trailhead.

To see the new bridge, check out MODOT's live webcams of the Hermann Bridge Project.

We stayed at A Secret Vine on Saturday, April 12th...the website said fresh homebaked goodies would await our arrival. They did but they were more like burnt offerings...4 small, hard, overbaked cookies not worthy of being eaten. The room was ok but there was at least 3 inches of water in the tub from who knows when...gross. The bed was very comfortable and the sheets were AMAZING. Unfortunately, we were doubly disappointed when our breakfast came the next morning...a frozen hashbrown patty, two coin sized frozen sausage patties, and a single piece of white bread french toast..or something disquised as such. The website said "Gourmet Breakfast"...I think not. So, for $150 I got a filthy bathroom, one nice bed, and left hungry the next morning. Definitely not worth the cost...I certainly did not get what I paid for. Oh well, live and learn... View Full Comment

Has anyone taken their bikes on Amtrak from Kirkwood out to Hermann? I've heard that for an extra fee, Amtrak will let you take your bike on the train. Also, does anyone know of sites to maps of bike trails in and around Hermann?
