Can you tell us the current trail conditions? Solid and dry or mucky from spring defrost/ heavy rains? Any other conditions we should be aware of? New to Katy, plan to go next week. Bike year around here in Mpls, trying to avoid our spring mud. And the foot of snow we got yesterday unbelievably. Boonville to Rocheport first. Other recommended sections this time of year?
Thanks!

Overall the trail is usually in pretty good shape most of the time. The thawed permafrost should be gone by now, although we have recently had below freezing days and light snow. With light rain the trail dries to decent riding quickly, maybe a day. Heavy rains, maybe give it an extra day. Depends on wind and sun. It is always decent to ride, but after rain just rides slower. Usually no mudholes. It is well maintained and well drained, for the most part.

Different people have different favorite sections. My favorite is Sedalia to Windsor, with Sedalia to Boonville next. A friend who rides the trail frequently likes Rocheport to Hermann and never rides west of Rocheport. There is a good guidebook available which should help. Boonville east is flat. Much is in shade part of the day. From Jeff City east you paralleld a highway much of the time. Not a lot of traffic, but it is there. Rocheport to Jeff City is remote. There are only a few parts of the trail that actually go along the river. Much depends on your ride plans. Are you doing an out and back from Boonville, or doing some manner of through ride? Tieing in Amtrak makes for a nice trip but spaces for bikes are limited and the schedules may not suit you. Best is to do as much research as you can first, then ride a part of the trail and decide what section you want to ride on the next trip. You will meet others on the trail who will add to your information.

Thanks, Anonymous, most helpful. Sounds like trail is dryer than here, good enough. Familiar with rain issues but we get less than you. Will now research more, especially your recommendations. We'll likely drive to various starting points, go out and back, move again. Hadn't looked at Sedalia to Windsor, will check it out. Spend rain days visiting Boonville sites, family from there.
