Wondering about the best 5 day stretch to do...around 150 miles or so. Prettiest, most interesting, best camping/ inns. This will be in October.

Start in Boonville and go east. Or if on an Amtrak start in Jeff City and go east.
October is perfect.

In 5 days it is honestly quite possible to ride the entire trail from Clinton to St. Charles.

If you really want to do something shorter...I would do the 150 miles on the east end of the trail.

In my opinion, the 25 miles from Rocheport to Hartsburg is the prettiest stretch of all....but I love the whole trail.

Good foliage color first week of October. Yellows and oranges against green. After that the yellows and orange dry up or drop off. Might have some reds if there are maples about. Sumacs turn red before anything else. Oaks turn later as a rule, often around the end of the month.
Conosider Amtrak to Sedalia then east. You are in the back woods between Sedalia and Pilot Grove. Downhill from PG to Franklin then flat to STL. Many options. PM train and an overnight in Sedalia, or AM train and overnight in Boonville/Franklin or Rocheport. Check schedule for Oktoberfest in Hermann.

Best section is from Boonsville traveling east. Early Fall coming? We've had unseasonably cool temperatures through August. Fall colors may come earlier this year.
