Katy Trail Rock Island Spur Comments
Portland

Stayed at Rivers Edge last night. Had a hard time getting a hold of them by phone so I called the bar, Holzhausers, and asked them if they knew if the campground was full. They said no, and it was worth the chance to ride there (from Tebbetts) on the chance there would be a spot.

Got there and called the number on the sign at the bathroom and the woman came down with a key to unlock it and take money. She also wanted to cut the grass (was about 3 inches tall) and I now wish she would have waited because I had wet grass clippings all over the place afterwards, but oh well. She showed me the bathroom/shower and it was pretty clean. She swept up anyway.

I asked her if there were towels. She said no, that most campgrounds don't provide towels and soap. I had stayed at Cooper's Landing the night before and they had soap and towels in their shower. Note to self: Bring towel and soap next trip.

Had something to eat at the bar (usual bar food fare) then met her back at the camp since she was finishing up the grass and brought me a towel since I didn't have one. That was nice. She was very friendly and accommodating.

The campground... you can hang a hammock, but options are limited. The trees I used were probably over 20 ft. apart and with my straps, were about the limit for a comfortable hang. From what I saw, you could probably squeeze 2 hammocks into the area comfortably even though she said there were some trees back in the woods that some people have used, but be prepared for mosquitoes. There are power outlets on the front and back of the shower shed, as well as a water faucet at the back with city water. The shower had a light that could be left on at the front if you need it.

The bar was open until about 1:30 and the folks leaving made a little noise, but not real bad. It is right across from the campground. There was some activity at the boat ramp across the road as well until late, but if you're sleepy it shouldn't be a bother. It was pretty quiet the rest of the night, except for my having insomnia and only sleeping maybe 2 hours the whole night. My bad. Good thing I only had a 18 mile ride to Hermann in the morning to catch the train.

I'd stay there again, for sure. The facilities were clean and price, reasonable. Bring your own towel and soap. Opt for tall grass over mowed. :p
