I've made two trips on the Mickelson Trail and have rode the Wabash from end to end and now I'd like to give the Katy Trail a go.

I'm looking at making a three day ride of around 120 miles. The person riding will drive up from Alabama and I will be going home from Omaha, so it will be half ways travel for us both.

I've a few questions for those who have knowledge of the Katy.

1. What would be the best 120 mile stretch to ride and in what direction to travel it... West to east or east to west.

2.Best lodging spots that are spread out around 40 miles apart.

3. Best time of the year to ride trail.

Any help appreciated.

One way- I would start in Sedalia, spend the night in Boonville, Spend the night in Jefferson City (south of the river), and spend the night in Hermann (south of Mckittrick). The river flows the same direction you would be travelling.
Round trip- I would start in Pilot Grove, spend the night in Jefferson City (south of the river) and then back again. I have ridden from Sedalia to Augusta. For me, thus far, the most fun and scenic is around Rocheport ± several miles. I vote late October. October 31 is a really fun time to be around Rocheport and Hermann (Leaves changing, Halloween Festival in Rocheport, and Octoberfest in Hermann if you like that sort of thing). The facilities (bathrooms and water at depots, ect) are shut off for the season very early November.

MPH from ST Louis on 8/6/2017 7:52:30 AM:
We live in ST Louis and have ridden the Katy in full length several times, here is what I would recommend for a 120 mile trip if you are camping
Take the train from Sedalia to Hermann, camp in Hermann City Park
Hermann to Tebbetts, staying in the Turner Hostel
Tebbetts to Easley a must is camping at Coopers Landing
Easley to New Franklin, camping at Katy Roundhouse
New Franklin back to Sedalia
This gives you 31-40 miles a day.

We are riding the Mickelson Trail in early September, any input you may have would be greatly appreciated!
We are considering riding from the tail to the sights, Custer State Park, Crazy Horse, Mt Rushmore etc...do you have any idea what the rides from the trail to these sights is like, safety, hills etc.
Thanks and enjoy your Katy trip!
