Hello - 4 girlfriends are having a mini-reunion in October for a Friday - Monday and wanted to ride the Katy Trail and visit wineries. We are not "advanced" cyclists so don't want to do too many miles/day. We really want to enjoy our rides and visit wineries. I am lost as to where to stay? Somewhere in the middle to ride both directions maybe? We would really only be riding Saturday and Sunday. Any help is greatly appreciated. I do already know that October is busy but we are from all corners of the country - hard to schedule us - we are not able to go at any other time. Thank you!

Check with Doug at the Bluffton Barn. He is in the center of the trail and only 10 miles from Hermann. His loft room would probably work and has a fully furnished kitchen. Plus he is in the country and has bonfires at night.

Wineries closest to the Katy are clustered around Hermann (across the river from McKittrick trailhead) and between Augusta and Defiance. The biking distance between the two communities is 41 miles, so you should be able to visit wineries in both areas.

Otherwise, there's Les Bourgeois in Rocheport and Lake Creek between Marthasville and Dutzow.

Enjoy!

Most of the wineries are clustered towards the Eastern end, as Patricia said, Augusta, Hermann, Defiance. October weekends are far, far busier than any other time for the wineries and for good reason: cool, but sunny days; new wines finishing off; lots of trail users. If you are really planning for an October weekend, you need to be making reservations now. You should also look up the Univ of Missouri - Columbia football schedule for October, because those Saturdays add a little to the hotel bookings in Central Missouri (e.g. if you are considering the Rocheport winery).
