Katy Trail Rock Island Spur Comments
Things to do in Jefferson City

A few people have posted comments about whether they should follow-through on previously planned trips to bike on the Katy Trail, in light of recent flooding in Missouri. If you decide to go ahead and embark on your trip, the following is a list of things that you can do in Jefferson City, in case you are not able to bike on the Katy Trail. I truly hope that the waters recede and you are all able to get on the trail, but here is some information in case you need a "Plan B:"

Things to do in Jefferson City:

Bike on our greenway system.

Bike on Capitol Ave. from the Capitol Building to MSP.

Tour the Missouri State Capitol Building. There is beautiful artwork, especially the Thomas Hart Benton Mural in the House of Representatives Lounge. The building is open 8 am – 5 pm almost every day, and free tours are available.

Tour the Missouri State Penitentiary (MSP) at the 700 block of Capitol Ave. Check the city’s Convention and Visitors’ Bureau (CVB) website for information. I recommend the longer historical tours for a tour that has a lot of historical and in-depth information.

Visit the CVB’s MSP Museum in the historic Marmaduke House at 700 Capitol Ave. at the corner of Lafayette and Capitol Ave.

Woodlawn and Old city Cemetary in the 1000 block of E. McCarty is next to a National Cemetary that is unique for having both Union and Southern soldiers buried in the same National Cemetary.

Enjoy downtown Jefferson City, with gift shops and cafes, many offering outside seating.

If you have a car check out the Runge Nature Center located on I-179

If you have a car check out the Museum of Missouri Military History.

Central Dairy. This is by far the best ice cream in the state. And the servings are huge.

Red Wheel Bike Shop on West Main rents bicycles.

Bicycle across Pedestrian/Bike bridge over the Missouri River. If you are a bicyclist visiting Jefferson City you must do this. Red Wheel Bike Shop is just a couple of blocks from the bridge. Rent a bike at Red Wheel and bike across the bridge.

We have a great entertainment district in the Central East Side. Check out the facebook pages or websites for The Mission (a bar that features local talent at the corner of East High and Ash), Prison Brews (our only brewery with great bar food on Ash St.), O’Donoghue’s Seafood and Steakhouse at 900 E. High (excellent food in a 100 year old building beautifully restored).

Another exciting venue on the East Side is Avenue HQ at the corner of Lafayette and Capitol Ave. Check out their facebook page to see if they will have a comedy night or other entertainment when you are in town.

Located in the same complex as Avenue HQ is The Bridge, a music venue. Check out their facebook page to see if they will have something you would enjoy.

You're welcome. I hope you are able to enjoy a lot of the Katy Trail. But if there's still closed sections you can still enjoy a lot of what Missouri has to offer. I forgot to mention that Columbia, 25 miles or so from Jefferson City, is a college town and has a lot of neat things to do, I just am not familiar with them. They have a greenway system also, and their MKT Trail connects Columbia to the Katy Trail. If it is not damaged you would enjoy biking on it. I think the spur is 5 miles and there is probably a well developed greenway system in other parts of Columbia. Maybe their Parks and Recs website has information on that.

I spent a couple of days in Jefferson City when my trip was rained out in May. We stayed at the Binder Park Campground in an RV. It is not close to the trail, but was really nice. Great showers and a laundry.
