Hoping to meet up with family in the Lake Ozark area after doing a mini-tour on the Katy! Seeking suggestions for relatively-safe roads to ride south from the KT (dirt or paved)! Unfamiliar with the area.

Many thanks!
Rebecca

I cannot recommend a route, but your biggest obstacles will be hills and traffic. That area is the front door to the Ozark Mountains. So lots of hills and completely different than the Katy (but if you're from Vermont, maybe it's no big deal). Second problem is traffic. The better roads (US highways) are well-maintained and the hills have been leveled out somewhat. However, traffic to the Lake on Fridays and back on Sundays would be more dangerous than I would like to take on. Heck, I try to stay off those highways by car on Sunday afternoons (think: alcohol + hours in the sun = some questionable drivers).

Also, and you probably know this, Lake of the Ozarks is huge: it can take many hours to get from one side to the other. Cell service/GPS is not reliable in the lower regions, so be sure you know exactly where you are going, either by car or bike. I would never bike that area.

Heh, thanks for the encouragement! I worked out a wiggly backroad route to Eldon, where I can get scooped by the family caravan and head into the lake. Also found the Jefferson City Greenway to get out of the city.

I think you will find that wiggly route will put you on some narrow blacktop roads without any shoulders, cars going 60mph+, and blind hills where those cars will not see you as they crest those hills.

Stay safe!

What date are you trying to get to Eldon? If I'm not doing something else I would haul you to Wldon for gas money.

You need to be a very experienced biker with a good rode bike to do that route. I would not do it, to dangerous.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I'm a confident about the biking but it sounds like car behavior on the backroads is a common concern. I'll look into alternatives.
