We are biking the trail and will need to get from St. Charles to Kirkwood to catch an Amtrak to Sedalia. Is that portion bikeable? Do you have any idea of other ways to get there with 2 people and 2 bikes?

I looked at that same route a few weeks ago planning for a Katy trail end to end bike ride in June or July.

It is 23 miles from St Charles trailhead to Kirkwood Amtrak. If you use Google maps, you might be able to find alternate routes to avoid busy highways. I think you might to check with a few shuttle companies and get a cost. If it was me, I would avoid the traffic alltogether, but depends how comfortable you are on riding on pavement.

Let us know what you decide. Have a great bike ride !!!!

From the home page follow the link "riding the Amtrak to the Katy." There are several routes there.

I would recommend backtracking on the Katy to get to the 364/Page extension bridge to cross the river, and then follow the trails to Creve Coeur Park. There are a couple options from there, but Route Suggestion 4 on the webpage above should be good.

One thing to consider: if you've been on the Katy several days, tackling city traffic is just a total buzz kill. We were shuttled from St. Charles to Kirkwood and I was so glad I didn't have to stress over cars and stoplights and routes after the peaceful trail.

Thanks for all the responses. I did see the route suggestion by Google maps, looks very complex over the final half. Does anyone have contact info for shuttles in that area? Thanks

Consider riding to the Airport instead. There are less expensive motels there and you can catch the Red line to Union Station...and ride Amtrak from there instead of Kirkwood.
http://www.bikekatytrail.com/airport-katy-trail.aspx lists ways to get between St Charles and Lambert airport.

We are riding the trail end of May. Staying at Lococo House B&B. They will be shuttling us to Kirkwood Amtrak station for a reasonable price. Maybe check with them?
