I plan on riding the KT from Saint Charles to Clinton towards the end of April. I plan on spending 3 - 4 nights on the trail. Is it recommended to make reservations for lodging in advance or possible to do it in route. I also plan on camping as much as possible as well.

April is a lighter month for lodging on the trail, but if you are staying at B&Bs, it's always best to give them some advance notice. I have found them to be very accommodating to changes due to weather, flats, etc. Of course, campgrounds are more flexible but some may not be open that early in the season (so call first). Since you are from Santa Fe, I would also warn you to prepare for rain during one or more of your days on the trail (no snow, though!).

Hi Nate,
Don't think you have to worry about camping reservations. The only place that fills up is Klondike Park and only on Fri and Sat nights. I never make camping reservations and have never found it a problem. I don't know much about other types of lodging but it would probably be wise to make reservations.

Have a good trip and don't forget to stop and smell the roses.

Nate, we suggest you start from Clinton at the western end. That way you are up and the trail is mostly down wind and down hill to st.charles. We own the Haysler House B&B suggest you check it out.

Having ridden it more than once - I would go west to east...as noted by an earlier comment.

And...I always have reservations...but will admit to having a little OCD....and I like to have a goal for the day...and KNOW that I have a nice bed and a good shower.
