Planning a future trip-2018. We have biked the entire Katy Trail twice and love it! Is this new trail from Windsor to Pleasant Hill good for a hybrid bike? I read a few posts that said it was rough with large rocks and ruts in places. Is the surface like the Katy Trail?

It's just like the Katy.

I run 35mm tires but for smoother ride 38mm -40mm tires would do well on the Rock island trail.

We rode our tandem from Pleasant Hill to Medford on Saturday, 3/18/17. Trail was in great shape. No problems.

As near as I can tell from reading other posters the problems are all east of Chilowee for about 6 miles. I haven't seen any real recent posts or any info that it has been fixed. However hybrid bikes are pretty versatile so I would try it, maybe let a little air out of tires

We road from Pleasant Hill to Windsor last weekend (3/16/17). We had a touring bike with 30mm and road bike with 28mm tires and had no issues. As soon as you pass Highway 2 going east between Medford and Chilhowee at about 650th St the gravel does get bigger. We assessed the situation and the traffic looked too busy on Highway 2 so we decided to ride it out on the trail and it was fine. There is about 3 miles of larger gravel and then 3 miles of what looks like shale gravel which was a little better. Once you get to Leeton it is back to normal conditions except for a couple of rough patches.

Looks the PM from DNR is allowing contractors to dictate aggregate size or is allowing cheaper (larger) is better and faster or is uninformed in civil road/trail contracts from DNR. Hope someone who has contract responsibly representing the owners of the RIT does the "right thing" for all the remaining RIT trail final surfaces.

Here's an article that explains that they are out of $$ to fix it, but then they found $25K and intend to fix it before the season gets too far underway (I know, contradictory). https://goo.gl/BjkNff
