Like many here I am excited to see activity on the RIT trail. The rails are pulled up and tie's stacked around Gerald, Union and Rosebud. Planning to ride the Pleasant hill/Windsor section in the next couple weeks.

Was wondering if anyone knew or had heard if the tunnel in Eugene was going to be incorporated into the trail. The 1,600' tunnel under hwy 17 has a unique construction, kind of like a cathedral. Would be thrilled and may even volunteer some sweat equity to get this section done if so...

I have ridden through the tunnel on the tunnel hill trail in southern Illinois and the experience was unique and mesmerizing. Head the warnings and turn the light on, even seeing the light at the end my awareness was thrown way off, kind of spooky actually.

The Missouri Bike and Pedestrian Federation posted this article yesterday:

1 Feb 2017: Rock Island Trail to spur economy in small towns up and down the corridor | Rolla Daily News

The article has pictures of the Gasconade River bridge and the tunnel you mentioned.

Tunnel Hill in Illinois is a great ride, from the Cypress swamps on the southern end to the tunnel and trestles to the north.

Thanks for the reply. The Tunnel Hill Trail is a great ride. I have seen more wildlife than any other ride on that trail. Last fall I had 11 deer spotted, I'm sure some were the same but still a great experience and have never ridden it without seeing a deer or turkey.

That's a great article, thank you. I didn't realize there was another tunnel under 63, that's fantastic. Great picture of the bridge also. I was concerned about trail scenery with the trail proximity to major roads. With these several unique features there is certainly heightened interest here for me.

Hoss, I believe the east end around the Gasconade river, Union and the Washington connector to the KT will be great but may take longer. These 2 connected trails will be the longest and "huge".
