I recently completed a 5-day, 500-mile round trip of the Katy Trail. I began in Clinton at 7:00am on October 1, 2016, rode all the way Machens TH and then on to Portage Des Sioux right on the Mississippi River. I then headed back and arrived back at Clinton TH at about 5:00pm on October 5, 2016. Shortest day was 87 mi. and longest day was 111 mi.I had nothing but wonderful experiences all along the trail, specifically where I camped at Coopers Landing and Marthasville! Completely agree that trail is most difficult riding east to west - no doubt!

That's an impressive ride. My buddy and I will start our first Katy ride on Oct. 28, a 5-day, west-to-east, one-way trip with a detour to Columbia. What are the conditions of the gravel, hard-packed or loose? I'm hauling about 30 pounds of camping gear and running 38mm Challenge Gravel Grinder tires. Are they overkill? What tires did you run? Thanks.

I've done several thru trips on the Katy carrying camping stuff. 38 semi slick or touring tires are my tire of choice. Gravel specific tires will be great. Lots of discussion here on that whole topic, and some will say to use 28s or 32s, but if you get rain, you will be happy you have those 38s. Ride what you have, make sure you see downtown Sedalia, Flat Branch in Columbia, Coopers Landing in Easley, the Catholic Church in Starkenberg, the shelter in Tebbetts, Daniel Boone's grave, pizza in Marthasville, ............oh yeah, have a great time too.
