Does anybody care to weigh in on the latest time in the year to cycle the entire trail; or, what about the earliest time?

April to October is the easy answer. It is always rideable--during daylight hours (park rules). But it is easier to do when the water is on at the trailheads and the bathrooms are open (Apr-Oct). It's also easier to do when the surface is hard and dry. It can get pretty mushy at the times of year when there is a lot of freezing and thawing, so I wouldn't recommend that -- plus, that would be bad trail etiquette. But if you are willing to bring plenty of fluids (or even filter water), and get a little off the trail for supplies/food, and can put up with cold or wet weather, have at it. That includes using fat bikes, XC skiing, or whatever.

There's your answer. Couldn't agree more.

April through October would better cover it. Water is turned off around the first of November. October is one of the most popular times due to tree color.

I have ridden sections in January, during the warm spell that always happens about the 3rd week. One year rode Rocheport to Hartsburg and return for lunch and it was a good ride. Year later rode Sedalia to Windsor, same week, the permafrost was melting or something. Trail was hard, did not sink, but there was a constant 1/8" bow wave that made the going twice the work and half the speed. Abandoned the trail for nearly adjacent state highways for the return. One regular on the trail wants to try it when the temps are below freezing and using studded tires. Figures the trail will be hard and fast.Gets dark early. Have backup lighting in case you are caught out.

Agree with all of above and I might add that I have ridden a couple times on Martin Luther King Day and the freeze/thaw cycle can be rough in "thaw" mode as it will turn surface into a spongy energy-sucking monster. Both my thru-rides have been in the month of October - it's just hard to beat!

Love September - October.

DO NOT enjoy the trail when it's in freeze-thaw mode. TOUGH riding and creates ruts in the trail.
