Just wanted to comment that the trail has the potential to have beautiful scenic vistas, as there are so many places where views of the Missouri River would be amazing. It is a shame that the level of undergrowth and trees block so much of those views, particularly on the river side. Tree branches hover so low over the trail, occasionally you hit your helmets on them, typically when they are wet from rain.

I have seen tourists trampling through what is obviously Poison Ivy trying to get through to see the river.

The Katy Trail could be so beautiful with a little defoliage effort.

That's one reason that I like to ride on parts of the Katy in the Winter. It's amazing what you can see with all the leaves gone.

There are places with benches along the way to view the river aren't there? Where would you suggest that DNR start cutting trees so you can have the view exactly where you'd like it?

Maybe JoshuaY is a landscaper looking for a DNR contract?

Hey everyone! I have just realized I'm an incredible douche! My apologies to everyone that have had to wade through my pointless, unhelpful comments.

In the areas just west of St Charles, I agree with the the original post. There are many areas there where it is hard to see the river. Last spring I was about 10 miles west of St Charles and they had the Lewis and Clark replica keelboat out on the river, including a crew dressed in costume, and it was difficult to see it through the trees.

Elsewhere, there are lots f great river views. My favorite is a few miles west of Treolar at the bend in the river.

Much of the problem is Bush Honeysuckle. You can help fix the problem on 10/23/2016:

I got rid of all the bush honeysuckle on my property but it took years of diligent monitoring. Since the birds spread the seeds, the stuff keeps popping up so the effort will go on for a long time. And it stays green well into December, so it still blocks the view in the winter.

Hey douche anonymous, these comments got the fine ggg to tell us about the bush honeysuckle clean up this month. A lesson learned for good on the trail.

Completely agree. This is an area I ride my MTB on the trail very often. I'd love to some clear views of the river along the trail from St Charles 39.5 all the way down to the Weldon Springs Trailhead near 56.0. Every fall as the leaves turn and the views open up a bit, I do take the trip down to Marthasville, and ride through Treloar to Gore and back. That stretch is exactly what I love about the trail ride, the river, the trail, the bluffs all very scenic and enjoyable. Most of my pics from the Katy Trail are from the Treloar area and heading west on the trail.

Really not putting the needle on anyone here, just thinking out loud that this is such a resource for our State, and it can be improved to have more of a visual impact and thus attract more riders.

I have many pics from a trip to California where they have all these cool bump out scenic "vista points" along the highways. I think the same thing could be done on the trail, on a smaller scale, but having that sort of visceral visual impact that creates memories.

I believe DNR funding has been cut or more limited. Need $$ for scenic vistas. The donations for benches an rest areas are a good idea too.

Voting for Missouri Amendment 1. A “yes” vote will continue for 10 years the one-tenth of one percent sales/use tax that is used for soil and water conservation and for state parks and historic sites. This will be resubmitted to the voters for approval in 10 years.

Definitely support the tax continuing - it's not a new tax. Something else to keep in mind on this discussion is that some of the things growing along the river help keep erosion under control. Perhaps someone from DNR or the Department of Conservation could weigh in on this discussion. Also, with funding being a problem, could communities, organizations, individuals, etc. sponsor an area for a place to view the river? This would be something like we have between mile markers 147 and 148, where there are 3-4 places with at least a bench where you can stop and view the river for most of the year.

There are several ways people can give back to make the trail better. This link will take you to the DNR donation page of their website:
