We are planning on riding Jeff City to St Charles Labor Day weekend.
The site is showing the trail as closed between 101-104.7. Several times we have been able to ride through closed sections depending on the condition. Has anyone been through this section lately is rideable or should we plan on a street detour?

Jon from N Texas on 8/24/2016 8:56:32 AM:
Also, where there are closures are KATY detours marked?

In the case of Rhineland-McKittrick closure the detour looks straightforward on the parallel highway; however, 94 looks like a narrow two-lane road without shoulders in that section. How is motor vehicle traffic in that area?

Hank on 8/26/2016 6:19:42 AM:
Traffic on Hwy 94 between Hwy 19 and Rhineland in general would be a little heavy for my taste. But it is not terrible and I wouldn't let it dissuade me from making the trip.

This trail section is in my neighborhood and I ride it often. Haven't been there since the closure and to my recollection it didn't seem like an area in need of heavy repairs. So possibly this too would be a section where you could ride through despite the closure.

Jon,
On the home page of this site there is a section marked:
Trail Closures and advisories that will take you to the DNR page for closures etc...

Jon from N Texas on 8/26/2016 3:05:36 PM:
Thanks MPH, that's where I saw the details about the Rhineland closure that you referred to. That prompted my more general question was about closures that we might encounter while on the trail and whether the detours are usually well marked, both for cyclists to follow and motorists to be aware that trail users may be sharing the road.

We're doing the trail from Clinton to St Charles in a few weeks with a family group, some of whom are not as comfortable as others riding on a narrow road with motor vehicles. Hank addressed my question about traffic on Hwy 94, thanks. I will make sure to ride sweeper in that section.

Hank on 8/27/2016 7:14:26 AM:
Jon, I really would not be too keen to ride that Hwy 94 section with a family group with inexperienced riders. I would encourage you to call either Rhineland Doll House or Joey's Bird House in McKittrick to see if they have any details on the extent of the closure. I would rather walk the bikes around a few closed sections than put a family group out on that highway.

Jon from N Texas on 8/27/2016 5:15:21 PM:
Thanks for the input. I'll try to get in touch with the local businesses or the state park office to see if they have details of the closure. We will scout the closed section of the trail to see if it is passable. Maybe MPH will post status after next weekend.

We do have support cars carrying baggage, so we can load the bikes and ferry around the closure if we must. All of the riders are adult experienced riders and half of the group regularly ride on similar rural roads... Sight lines look good on that section even if the shoulder is wanting. With our 8 ft long recumbent tandem bicycle with daylight bright tail light bringing up the rear, I think it will be manageable.

I asked about signs for the trail detour because they benefit motorists as well, letting them know that cyclists may be on the road.

MidSouth from Rogersville on 8/27/2016 5:42:01 PM:
The times that I have had to detour out onto Hwy 94 in the past, I don't recall any signs to warn motorists of cyclist on the road.

Rode through Treloar to Rhineland no problems the trail has been repaired almost back to normal conditions 8/28/2016

Jon from N Texas on 8/29/2016 5:35:01 AM:
Thanks for the update on trail conditions around Rhineland. This forum and its participants are great!

Now can somebody take care of the weather in a few weeks to make it perfect for our ride? %^)

MPH from St Louis on 8/29/2016 9:52:49 AM:
Thank you for the update Phil!
We are taking Amtrak to Sedalia thursday morning, looking forward to five days riding back to St Charles and it looks like the weather is going to be great!
