As I'm sure many are aware, the Rock Island State Trail is a huge step towards having a trail system that spans the entire state of Missouri. I'm sure getting impatient waiting for it to open. I'd rather not park a car on the trail and I'm just 7 miles from the Rock Island arm opening up later this year that will join the Katy in Windsor. Has anyone seen any progress? Any perspective as to when exactly you think it will be completed? Has anyone ridden a new part of the trail prior to the official opening? I'm dying for details! Thanks!

A small section may open later this year...it took many years to get the Katy Trail constructed...

The bridge is out, just south of Pleasant Hill. There is a trail that runs from water ever type of waterway it is (creek or river) all the way to Wingate. The trail is in crappy condition and to be honest I don't expect it open anytime this year. It has not changed for 3-4 years.

I got off the Katy at Windsor onto the Rock Island trail heading west last month. The first 1.5 miles were great. Then the trail got extremely rough with large rocks. After meeting 5 cows on the trail about a mile later, I decided to turn back. I sure the cows would have let me pass, but the trail was too rough for a touring bike.

I notice that just east of the Katy there was heavy equipment on the Rock Island Trail. Looks like they are actively working on it.

I've biked Leeton to Windsor on the Rock Island twice in the last month. It's not bad at all & will be better when the roll over it to pack it more. I understand that the Chilhowee to Leeton segment is in about the same shape as Leeton to Windsor.

Thanks for the info A Cyclist. Planning a Sept. ride & hoping that just maybe the RIT would be good from Pleasant Hill - Windsor. Any info for that stretch would be appreciated! TIA

You're welcome, Rex. I do agree with Jerry, the conditions that I faced would not be good on a touring bike. That will change, I'm sure, but who knows when. I'll be happy to give updates if I'm on the Rock Island here in the future.

I went looking July 18 around Peculiar for any progress heading East. Found none. Walked where the trail will go and was muddy truck tracks and waist high grass and not suitable for bike.

Well that's peculiar.

Whoops. Live in Peculiar meant to say Pleasant Hill. LOL.

My daughter and I took a ride in the truck to check out progress of the P. Hill to Windsor Katy project. We took back roads out at right angles and were able to view large completed runs of the trail. The challenge will be bridge completion just south of Pleasant Hill. The rest of the trail seems to be making good progress.

Thanks for checking it out, John. These kind of reports are helpful to those of us on the other side of the state. I can't wait to ride some of this new trail.

Thanks for the update, Bill. I would love to hear how the Chilhowee to Leeton segment is.

I rode the Windsor to Chilhowee section yesterday. Loved it. I have road tires on my bike right now and did alright. Some sections have a little bigger rock and it was a little bit rough but not that bad but over all had a nice ride. I think it will depend on the kind of bike you have. I have a carbon fiber seat post and carbon fiber front forks so I didn't think it was that bad in those section's that had the little bit bigger rock. Will for sure go back and ride farther out. Got a late start yesterday or would have gone further.

I'm sharing my experience from this weekend, I rode from Windsor to Leeton and then rode from Hwy 13 to Chilhowee. If you are use to riding the Katy Trail, this is a much rougher ride. The gravel is much larger. The trail does not appear to be rideable past Chilhowee, the gravel is even larger and not groomed. It would also be a good idea to pack a little more for refueling. I rode on a cross bike, but nothing fancy. My opinion is the trail needs a little more settling time or additional smaller gravel to be an enjoyable ride for any distance. I am looking forward to this trail being complete and ready to ride. The Katy Trail has been great and it will be nice to have another option with the additional connection to Kansas City. Thanks for the hard work on the Rock Island Trail!

I rode the Chillhowee to Leeton section last night on a road bike with 35C hybrid tires although some section were a little rough..nothing that I would consider a problem ..will be heading chillhowee toward pleasant hill will up date Yall on once I have completed

We rode from Windsor to Leeton today. Most of it is in great shape with the last couple miles being rougher due to not having the fine top layer of rock. It's in much better shape than a month ago!

We have friends just off the trail in Leeton, opening a store and possibly bike shop. Super friendly people, wanting to help and cater to bikers and hikers. They're on the corner of old downtown in the old bank building.
