Full ride, June 3rd through June 7th. Any guesses at how wet the trail will be this year? (2016)

What's your guess Joe?
Do you think it will be wet after it rains?
Do you think it will dry rather quickly beings its gravel?

Jerry Whittle from Belleville Illinois on 5/27/2016 8:42:34 AM:
This far out the weatherman should get the sunrise and sunset times correct. You're probably safe guessing that the temps will be between the record highs and lows, but records are meant to be broken. Rain? In Spain stays mainly in the plain, but no way to explain in Missouri.

Joe, you are from Wichita so you know that until the middle- to end of June, the weather is bringing Gulf moisture up and getting it smashed by cold fronts. Until that system moves northward in the next few weeks, you should build in 2 days of rain into a week-long schedule. The safest (driest) times are the last 3 weeks of July, and of course, October.

Does it matter?

Rainwear.....fenders.....wider tires....plastic bags.....shower cap on the helmet......

I don't think everyone is such a carefree diehard fashion plate as you Arky, out riding in the rain wrapped up in plastics bags with your shower cap on.

Joe from Wichita on 5/28/2016 6:13:36 AM:
Oh, a little rain on the dome while I ride is no big deal. I just have some concerns with how the trail behaves when it's been wet. I don't have any crushed lime stone trails near me for comparison. I planned on riding my 28mm tires, done it before when it was dry. Should I bust out the old MTB and put 30+ mm or do I need to go even bigger when it's wet? Should have been more clear in my question. lol

I did a loaded end to end trip recently in the first week of May after several big rain events. I used 37s, and I sure wish I had 40s on for the trip.

My point of view: I normally ride my touring bike (Salsa Vaya) on the Katy with 32s if unloaded, and 37s if loaded: I will readily admit that I like bigger tires because I find them to stay on top of the surface--I don't like making ruts, nor do I like getting caught in someone else's ruts--so if you ask me, bigger semi slicks work best. They also save you some pitch flats and trouble at road crossings and wash out sites. Big tires don't slow me down at all in the rain, not much otherwise, and make for a better trip.

I would be checking the river levels, as they are predicting some flooding. Some areas are not affected by this, but a lot of others are.
Here is the site we use: http://www.riverwatch.noaa.gov/forecasts/STLRVSLSX_MO.php

Joe, I just noticed that there is approx. 4 miles of the trail east of Rocheport that has been closed due to flooding. I've ridden the trail twice and some of the lower sections are affected by the rain more than others so I'd err on the side of using bigger tires. This is overall a great trail so have fun and ignore the smart__ comments.

I rode the trail between Boonville and Jefferson City on Sunday, May 29 and back to Boonville on Monday, May 30. You must heed the trail closed signs west of Rocheport and take the ~4 mile detour as noted on the website: https://mostateparks.com/advisory/63695/flooding-and-closure-advisory-katy-trail-state-park
As the river was rising onto the trail on Sunday, many of the thousands of riders on the Peddlers Jamboree group ride were going around the trail closed signs and gates and riding on the trail through foot deep water. As of Monday, this was no longer possible since the water is several feet above the trail and it is completely impassable. The marked detour travels on busy Highway 40 with a rough gravel shoulder so be careful and allow plenty of extra time.

Thanks all! I will update here with conditions when I go. If any one is curious to see how it went come back in a couple weeks. I have been watching the river gauges at Boonville and St. Charles and its going to be way below flood level by the time I arrive. Lets hope that stuff dries out quick or I will have to detour any way!

You selected a great time to do this. Latest weather reports are showing most of Missouri not receiving any precipitation through next Thursday, June 9th. Have Fun!
