Will there be connections between these two trails in the east?

Jerry Whittle from Belleville Illinois on 3/30/2016 8:50:18 AM:
From what I've gathered, there will eventually be one near Jefferson City. A decade or so from now there may be connection at Washington MO.

Following up to what Jerry said, Union is only 8 or 9 miles away from Washington. I don't know how bike-friendly the roads are between those two cities, but that would be a logical place to connect. By the time the RIT reaches Union, the MO River Bridge at Washington should have a nice safe bike lane for easier access to the Katy.

To visualize the two trails in relation to each other, go to the RIT map at http://www.bikerockisland.com/rock-island-trail-map.aspx and click the Katy Trail checkbox, and then zoom out.

Again, that's only 8 or 9 miles from Union to Washington. I'm sure people will ride it whether there's a formal trail connecting the cities or not.

I can't imagine were they would put a connector near Jeff City unless they send you 20 miles down Hwy 54 to Eugene or 20 miles down Rt. B to Meta. Hwy 54 is a very busy 4-lane Highway and Rt. B is a very curvy 2-lane blacktop with no shoulder and heavy semi-truck traffic.

It seems to me it would make more sense to continue the rail-to-trail down to Chesterfield and connect back to the Katy across the Missouri River there. That is, if that segment of the rail could be acquired.

Jackson County has officially acquired the Rock Island rail property from Truman Sports Complex to Greenwood. The most positive part is that they expect to open it for biking in Spring 2018. I can't figure out if the rest of the RIT line to the Katy will be open by then. Anyone?
