I'm hoping to take a night away and spend some time on the Katy Trail. I'm completely lost as to where to stay and "how" to do this -- what I'm envisioning is getting into a town in the early evening, taking a walk, having dinner, and staying somewhere for the night -- I"m open to any inexpensive lodging, mostly just need a comfortable bed. Then the next day, I'd like to get up and have breakfast before heading out on a nice, long walk involving some wine tasting. And then some lunch (possibly a late lunch) before driving back to Kansas City.

But I'm not sure what location along the Katy would afford me the best bang for my buck -- "buck" meaning TIME! I won't even have 24 hours away, so I'd like to not be driving all over the place. Of course, transportation will also be a consideration if I'm doing some wine tasting.

Any ideas? Has anyone done a shorter getaway like this along the Katy Trail? I'd welcome recommendations for an itinerary, of sorts! It's hard to envision, especially not having visited this trail before. Thank you!!

I think Rocheport would be the ticket. It's a short drive from KC and has the tunnel and limestone bluffs to the west. To the east there are huge limestone bluffs, the river, petroglyphs, and a trail that leads up to the winery and bistro for wine and cheese tray at the A-frame or decent food at the bistro, both overlooking the river bottom to the south. The Dormatory at the Schoolhouse BandB fits the bill for basic sleep accommodations. There are other BandB options too if you'd like a bit more than basic. Abigail's and the General Store are both good stops for food and drink.

Rocheport has the annual drunk Irish bowling contest too on the roads. They close the roads and it draws crowds from miles. I did not hear about this years bowl though?
