My husband and I are planning our first multi-day bike trip. We are planning on riding from Machens to Clinton over 5 days at the end of March. Is there a good place to keep our car at during this trip?

Not in Machens, I don't think you can even get to Machens the last time I was there. I believe the trailhead parking area in St. Charles is fairly safe. If you were to stay somewhere in St. Charles you could possibly leave your car with them. If you drive to Clinton, you can leave your car at the Community Center.

I'm looking into a trip during the end of March early April. I'm looking for a ride share. I only need to be dropped off in Columbia, MO; however I would be willing to pay my share. How are you planning on getting back to your starting point?VXQ3

Something else to keep in mind when cycling the trail in March is that the rest rooms with running water are not open and water fountains are not normally turned on until April 1st.

March weather can be a wide range from cold and snow, rainy, windy to warm and sunny 60s. Need a Plan B especially if it's your first multi day overnight ride.

Free safe parking both at trailhead in St Charles & a few miles away at the train station.

The St. Charles trailhead is a good place to park, but the train station is more like 15 miles away from the trail...

Since there are apartments across the street from the St. Charles trailhead, parking in the lot would be probably safe for several days. Not sure if overnight doesn't get ticketed though since its public parking?

I've done a couple of cross-Katy organized rides where we parked in that lot. The organizers had us put a placard on the dashboard that said we were a member of the group and who to call if there was a problem. I had the feeling (not direct knowledge) that they got permission for us to park there for the week.

The St. Charles Trailhead/Frontier Park area does allow overnight parking. However, to park there overnight, I would contact the St Charles Police Department, their non-emergency number is 636-949-3300, and they will take your info along with giving you verbal permission/permit to leave your car there. I believe they prefer you park in the large lot west of the Lewis & Clark boathouse but it has been awhile since I talked to them.
