Haven't risen to town yet but it's hard to imagine why Sedalia was included on the Katy Trail route. The ride into Sadelia was unsupported by the city fathers. Sedalia has shown no investment in attaching to the Katy Trail. Very disappointing ride in.

Huh?

Sedalia is included in the Katy Trail because the railroad went right through Sedalia and the Katy Trail is on the old railroad bed. So you haven't gone there yet, but a disappointing ride in? Doesn't make much sence???

Please don't bash Sedalia before you've even been there! The Sedalia Depot is fabulous and does a lot to support the Katy Trail and riders. Check out the exhibit of the winning photos of the 2015 Katy Trail photo contest they sponsored. There are some very cool old railroad tracks and lights on the eastern side of Sedalia. Enjoy your Katy Trail ride and all the towns along the way.

I'm guessing what the original poster meant was that the trail does not go straight through on the original route. It meanders through some residential streets to get to the depot. The reason for that it is that it had to cross a major freight line that is still operating. So the route was changed to go over at a safe crossing. Now, as to why a viaduct or tunnel was not placed on the freight line, I do not know the answer.

What I would like to see in Sedalia is a path from the trail down to Kehde BBQ. It's only 500 feet from the trail, but to get there safely (not ride on US-65), you have to ride about 15 blocks out of the way and circle back.

re: Kehde's Barbeque

Can anyone tell me if from the State Fair campgrounds off Clarendon Rd, are the streets which go east through the fair grounds accessible? Many of them appear to be gated and I presume they are normally closed. Looks like 16th street might be rideable with care between Clarendon and S Warren.

I'm used to taking the lane when biking, when necessary to cycle safely, but I prefer lower traffic streets for riding. 65 doesn't look like a fun place to ride. A two-way bike path on the east side of 65 seems like it would be a real improvement!

I just rode Sedalia last week and thought it was one of the more interesting places along the trail. The Depot gift shop, museum, bike shop and grounds are great. The fairgrounds is interesting and a great place to overnight. There is a great drive-thru BBQ place just north of the campground about 1/2 mile. The Bothwell Lodge, north of town, is great if you can get there.

I agree about Sedalia being a neat place to visit. Ranks up in my top 2 along with Boonville. I have ridden along 65 to get to Kehde BBQ and even though it is a short ride, it has broken shoulders and the cars go by fast. Even a 2-foot bike path would help those businesses along the trail.

To answer your question, Jon, if coming from the West, I will dismount and walk my bike down the bank of the overpass and ride along 65. I have not found a way to maneuver through the Fairgrounds. If coming from the East, I just ride through the residential area. It certainly makes Kehde a destination, but boy is the food worth it!

Looks like you could take W 20th (at intersection of S Harrison and the Katy Trail) for a direct ride to it without riding along Hwy 65.

RE: route avoiding 65. Yes, from the east side, there are "back" streets from the trail to businesses on 65. It adds about a mile (each way) if camping at the state fair campground to get back on the trail and ride east to Harrison and double back. That might be the best option, though.
