The Missouri Bicycle and Pedestrian Federation has a good article, dated September 28, about the status of the Katy extension to KC and the Rock Island trail:

Cross State Rock Island & Katy Trail System: Where are we? What remains to be done?

Its a good update on the progress of both trails.

Wow, I dare say most people in the state have no clue. If they pull this off, it will be something. A 450 mile loop? Gateway Arch to Liberty Memorial in downtown KC? And beyond?

BTW, rock and gravel has already been laid on the section of Rock Island west of Windsor. Not sure how far they have gone, but according to this news, plan is to have it open in 2016.

Big winner in all this is Windsor. Not sure what the folks in Clinton were thinking, as there was an alternate trail choice that would have kept them in the loop.

For those wondering, my guess is the Rock Island trail route from Windsor to St. Louis will not be nearly as flat as the Katy. More hills to climb.......and coast down. East of Versailles, towns are bigger and are closer together, so a lot more to see and do in that regard. And different landscape. That is Missouri Ozarks.
