We may be visiting some friends in Iowa soon, and I wanted to sample some trails up there if all goes well. I realize that there are a lot of rail-trails and others there. Does anyone here have recommendations? We would be doing day trips of 20-30 miles. Are any trails especially scenic? I have seen enough corn along the Katy....

bikeiowa.com is a good resource for trail information. We've ridden the Raccoon River Valley Trail several times and the High Trestle Trail. Both are in the Des Moines area.

I rode all of the Wabash and Raccoon River trails last year and if you don't want to see corn cross them off your list of possibles

The Heritage Trail from Dubuque to Dyersville is 25 miles one way. Crushed limestone surface and in great condition. Beautiful scenery. Limited services. Bring your water. Eat at either end or at Durango.

I agree - lots of corn in Iowa...but the High Trestle Trail is not be missed in my opinion. The bridge - especially at night - is awesome.

from Ankeny the trail to Slater is flat, smooth, but boring. I recommend the trail on east side of Saylorville Lake because it has some gentle hills and some great scenery.

Just got back from riding the Raccoon River Valley trail from Perry to Jefferson IA. Nice to ride a paved trail (part concrete part blacktop) but you will see lots of corn if they haven't harvested it yet. The blacktop part from Herndon to just north of Cooper had some rough spots (cracks, potholes, bubbles, patches).

The High Trestle Bridge was also nice paved concrete and the bridge lit up at night is fun. You can get to it at night by taking HY210 east of the bridge. There is a parking lot (signed) that is about a half mile east of the bridge. You will still need a light but it shorter than riding from the trailhead in Woodward.
