I'll be driving from Georgia to St.Charles in August. I plan to take the train to Sedalia and ride back to St.Charles over 5 days. My question is where is a good place to leave my car in St.Charles while I ride?

MidSouth from Rogersville, MO on 6/24/2015 6:57:16 PM:
I think most park in the large parking lots at the trailhead in St. Charles.

You should park at the St. Charles Trailhead/Frontier Park lot. To park there for 5 days, you should contact the St Charles Police Department, their non-emergency number is 636-949-3300, and they will take your info along with giving you verbal permission/permit to leave your car there. I have done this several times and sometimes they will direct you to a general area where they want you to leave your car.

I have never taken the train but you do have to come back over to St. Louis County(Kirkwood, MO) I believe to catch a train to Sedalia.

Thank you both for your inputs. It looks like I need to find a place to park in St. Louis close to the Amtrak station since I will be taking the train to Sedalia and starting my ride there.

You might want to consider parking in one of the trail head lots and taking a taxi to the train station, most of them will carry a bike if you give them a heads up. You can also get a shuttle from several outfitters in St. Charles

Check with the Loco House B&B in St. Charles. They shuttle with a nights stay and may be viable option for you.

When my kids were young, you could describe our place as the "Loco House", but I'm pretty sure Trek is referring to the < Lococo House > (http://www.bikekatytrail.com/lococo-house-iii.aspx).

We stayed at the Lococo House in June before our Katy Trail ride. Everything about our stay was wonderful! While they do not have their own shuttle service any more, they recommended and supplied information for two shuttle services. We used one of them, catching a ride from St. Charles to Clinton. We were able to leave our car at Lococo House for the duration of our trip. I highly recommend it! Wonderful people, beautiful accommodations, and exceptional meals!

If you wouldn't mind would you share the name of the two shuttle services the Loco House recommended to get from St Charles trailhead to Kirkwood Amtrak?

KC from Austin on 3/9/2016 6:04:08 PM:
Don't let anyone talk you into parking in St. Charles and riding your bike to the Kirkwood train station. That would be a terrible way to start your vacation, IMO.

No problem. Summer before last we left a car at St Charles and drove the other to the train station which also has a lot. Both cars were safe and there wasn't a charge. Don't ride from one to the other. It has been done but I'd never do it in traffic, with gear, or without a local to ride with. The train to Sedalia worked great. Have fun!

Does anyone know if there is a fee for parking long term at the St. Charles trailhead? We are planning on leaving our truck there for 6 nites, taking a shuttle to Clinton and biking back to St. Charles

Anonymous on 3/11/2018 2:31:21 PM:
The state does not charge a fee for using the trailheads or for using our state parks for day use. Support the local merchants along the trail and we'll be happy.
