I am planning to ride from St Louis to Kansas City. Does anyone know the best way to reach the Katy Trail from Union Station in St Louis? Any tips from anyone that's ridden the trail before? Thanks!

To add to the above - does anyone have thoughts on whether it would be best to arrive at St Louis Union Station and try and bike to the start of the Katy trail? Or whether it would be better to take the train to Kirkwood, and try and find a shuttle from there to the Katy? I'm looking for the quickest and most cost effective way to get to the Katy Trail from an Amtrak Station in/near St. Louis. Thanks very much for any advice!

If you want to start in St. Charles, then maybe Kirkwood would be easier.

If you want to start at the beginning of the trail (in Machens), then your best bet, in my opinion, is to ride to the St. Louis station (side note: Amtrak has not run through Union Station since '78. It's now a mall and the actual station is a few blocks away, under I-64).
If you do go to St. Louis station, you can then ride downtown and either catch the Riverfront Trail, or go across the McKinley Bridge (bike lane), and ride north. Both will end up on the Illinois side at the Chain of Rocks bridge. You take the Confluence Trail on the Illinois side up to Alton, cross the Clark Bridge (bike lane), and navigate Mo-94 and a few side roads to get to Machens. Keep in mind that when you get to Machens, you really need to ride on to St. Charles (12 miles) for services (food, water..).
