My son and I plan to do a 3 day trip right before the DNR ride. Does anyone know if we will run into trail groomers? There's nothing that will ruin a ride quicker than slogging through miles of freshly graded gravel.

I wouldn't think dnr would ruin their own ride.

I have to smile at the thought of DNR grooming the trail. About the only time the trail is worked on is do repairs after a hard rain and/or flooding.

I really wouldn't worry about grooming. If it is a wet spring, you'll be glad they do it (if they do it).

You may want to keep track of rainfall before you ride and adjust your tire size though. I ride 32s most of the time, 38s when I want to go comfy, and 40s when it's wet. Is that necessary? Probably not. Am I a sicko anal retentive hobbiest who like to change things up and don't need much of a reason to do so? Yes.

It all depends on the weather.

I rode the entire trail several years ago (2006 I think) the week before the DNR ride and encountered a few maintenance crews. It was no big deal - kind of interesting, actually.

Shrikes and I participated in the DNR ride in 2013. There was a lot of damage on the trail from rain and flooding prior to the ride. There was some concern that the riders would have to be shuttled around a few closed sections of trail. That was not necessary, as the maintenance crews were able to get the trail repaired and open for the ride. If you had been riding the previous week that year, it probably would have been unpleasant!

You might consider changing your plans to ride after the DNR ride. If they do have to lay fresh gravel, there is nothing like having 350 bikers packing it down for you.

Our group has often ridden the Katy end-to-end the week before the DNR ride. We do encounter DNR personnel mowing, but I don't recall any issues with maintenance crews or trail conditions.
