My husband and I are planning to ride just a day trip on the trail. Out and back to where we started about 50 miles total. What would be a good scenic section to try. We are open to where to start but would like to stay in the western half of the trail. Once we have a route picked out where would be a good place to stay?

Around Rocheport is the best place to ride. I like Rocheport to Hartsburg

Anything between Boonville and Jefferson City. The view of the Capitol building along the river is nice - so is the bridge across with the bike lane. The 9 mile spur into Columbia is also nice.

I agree with the Rocheport to Hartsburg comment. That's my favorite 25/50 miles of the KATY. Rocheport to Hartsburg. Lunch at Hartsburg. Ride back. Stop at Cooper's Landing for something to drink and just because its a quirky little place on the way down and/or back. Sounds like a great day to me.
