So we know you are a human, please answer this easy math quiz:
5 + 4 =
Diane from Giddings, TX on 10/1/2014 7:18:56 PM:
We were so disappointed at Turner's. The lady made us feel like we were inconveniencing her. Six of us came in on our bikes for lunch and asked about charging our cell phones. She made a point of telling us how high her utility bill was. She asked our driver to move the van beause it was in her way when we were the only ones in there. She was much nicer to a local man than us. The food was good but not worth sitting through the horrible service. We miss Dottie!

"how high her utility bill was"
This kind of thinking really gets me. A quick little bit of math shows that it takes less than half a penny to charge a cell phone from empty. Let's be generous and call it one cent. You can get a cheap power strip for $5. So for less than $10 a year, you can give your customers what they are really craving (sometimes disproportionately so) -- a full cell phone. I have had the same issue at a few hotels and B&B's along the trail and would suggest they consider the same. I now carry an external USB charger that I picked up on eBay.

The post about unaccommodating business owners saddened me. I travel overseas, and the restauranteurs bend over backwards to make you feel comfortable. I had thought of inviting my British friends to bike the Katy - but would be horrified if we were treated this way. Is this commonplace ? Thank you

Don from Ellisville, MO on 10/2/2014 6:28:59 PM:
Carol, no it is not common to be treated this way on the Katy. The vast majority of Katy visitors have a great experience, but like anything else, the squeaky wheel gets the grease (and shows up in the comments). I have traveled extensively in Europe and would compare accommodations and hospitality along the Katy to be equivalent to similar small towns in Germany, France, and Ireland -- small businesses that occasionally have to accept subpar help in order to get a day off. But it is not their intention for you to be treated poorly.

Gary from Near Tebbetts on 10/2/2014 6:56:13 PM:
I have to discount Diane's comments a little because in one sentence she says they were the only ones in there and in the next she says a local man was treated better than them. Seems to be a conflict there.

Well let's see. Maybe when they got there they were the only ones there. And then someone else, a local man, came in later. Posted as anonymous, I realize that could make no sense what so ever and just couldn't be possible. The only real possibility is that someone had to fabricate such nonsense beings they are from out of state, giving a state resident right to find some lame way to discredit them. Seriously Gary??

Doty and Turners are relatives and alot alike.

Brad Zumwalt from Lincoln, NE on 10/6/2014 3:11:46 PM:
I ate at Turners for breakfast on October 1. I found the owner to be very friendly and gracious. The meal was terrific (meatlovers omelette)and a very good value. Maybe, you caught her on a bad day.

Gary from Near Tebbetts on 10/7/2014 10:12:02 AM:
Thank you for opening my eyes, Mr. anonymous. Come to think of it, I really hate it when I pull into a restaurant on the trail and they will not air up the tires on my bike and ask me to move my bike off their sidewalk when I am the only one there. Cheesus, don't they recognize royalty when they see it? :-b

Anything to discredit a poster who feels they got subpar treatment. Classy of you to say the least Gary.

Desertpig from Tucson on 10/8/2014 5:16:42 PM:
2 of us ate at Turner's in late September and everyone there was accomodating and friendly. Even though we were there during their breakfast hours they gladly prepared a veggie burger for me.

Al on 10/19/2014 1:31:02 PM:
We were very pleased with Turner's. We arrived 4 minutes prior to closing and the female owner was completely accommodating. We were able to still order anything on the menu, were offered refills until we were full, were offered dessert and friendly chatter until we finished (20 minutes after closing time). She could have said, "We close in 4 minutes, sorry" but she did not. We will definitely be back!

Al Bundy from Park City, Utah on 10/21/2014 12:18:10 AM:
Well, maybe I will move back to Missouri now that it seems it isn't so horrible after all.

People who don't sign their name are not to be trusted lol

Pseudio on 10/29/2014 11:01:35 AM:
I agree Dotty. Keep up this post since it is enjoyable to get people's different perspective on all the services along the KT.

Dotty from Hartsburg on 12/28/2014 8:45:23 AM:
I am very sorry about your unpleasant visit to Turners. I will be taking over again Jan 1st . Stop in when you ride through Hartsburg again, fill your water bottles, charge your phone, we will be Very happy to see you :)

betty from ohio on 1/17/2015 10:26:39 AM:
sorry you had a bad experience. We ride the trail once a year and have never had bad service. Best place our group has ever stop was Mokane bar and Grill, The owners have always help us and been friendly, My husband had some mechanical issues in October 2014 when we stopped there for dinner and camp. We needed a bike shop and there was no place close so the owner drove my husband to Columbia which is probably 40 miles away to a walts bike shop to get the repairs done and wouldn't even take a dime for helping us. We was able to get back on with our ride because he was so helpfull
