Everyone who is interested in Biking and enjoying this, needs to read this. Don't let them take away funding...

What this would do is remove "bicycle" from the list of things that could be funded under a proposed 1-cent sales tax for transportation to be put to voters. To my knowledge the state rep (Curtman) who sponsored this amendment hasn't said why he did it. Likely it's just a way to sabotage the bill and either hang up its approval OR a ploy to generate opposition if in fact it does go to the voters.

Games-playing. Our "leaders" in action.

It would also "Prohibit(s) bicycle operation on state roadways if there is a bicycle path or trail running generally parallel and within two miles of a roadway with specified exceptions."

So in effect it could make it illegal to ride your bike from say, a B&B to downtown Rocheport on the state highway through town beings there is a bike path that generally parallels within 2 miles of your route. As a tourist in town you could do it though, if you had a "motorized escort" or could prove that you were doing so "due to an economic hardship."

But if you were going from your home (if you lived in Rocheport) to a place of business, you could do so if you rode on the shoulder.

There is an interesting thread in the Forums on Crazyguyonabike titled "Missouri bike ban bill?"

Trek, the bicycle funding amendment is a separate bill from the "bike ban" bill. Both are equally ridiculous however. I think it's possible the bike ban bill has its genesis in opposition to the Race Across America, which uses Hwy 94 near the Katy Trail.

Race Across America uses the roads where I live sand I've seen how it creates traffic issues noon and night for the 3-4 days the race rolls on through. I actually have mixed feelings about it, as I've seen them create quite long backups at peak driving periods that frankly weren't very safe.

HOWEVER, I do think it is an awesome event in total. And, a quick story: I was driving 94 last year late at night when I rolled up behind a Race vehicle. This was the section between Portland and Bluffton which is very hilly and narrow. So as I drove up on them I was perturbed as I knew it would likely be a long stretch before I would have an opportunity to pass.

So I was grumbling. However this quickly turned into awe as I watched the cyclist take these uphills climbs at literally 10-15 mph. And of course we were hitting 40+ plus on the downhills. I ended up following him the whole way into Bluffton, maybe 6-7 miles in total, in what took maybe 20 minutes. This guy's power on the uphills was truly incredible and a sight to behold. All at probably 1 a.m. or so.

From MOBikeFed today:
An anti-bicycle amendment was resoundingly defeated on the floor of the Missouri House today. The amendment, introduced by Rep. Paul Curtman of Pacific, would have removed bicycling from the major transportation funding proposal that will appear before Missouri voters this November, if approved by the General Assembly this spring.

Bart Kormans HB 2279 banning bikes on Missouri highways is not on schedule to be voted on in the house. You're right Hank, it is equally ridiculous as the funding bill.

This article reveals the emperor (Rep. Curtman) has no clothes on this issue. It was child's play, and the grown-ups in the legislature thankfully squashed it. http://www.emissourian.com/news/state/article_73d496ed-740e-5b59-abcc-a0f59edfafb6.html
