Hi Folks, I am planning a mid May trip on the KATY, West to East starting in Sedalia and stopping in St. Charles. Will there be any problem finding potable water at trail heads or towns along the way? I am planning on camping each night.

ArkyKenny on 4/1/2014 12:05:32 PM:
You shouldn't have any trouble finding water.

FYI, there is nothing the matter with the water that you find at the trail, but I tend to fill up at C-Stores/restaurants/businesses if possible because the water is more likely to be filtered (and tastes better), plus I can usually get ice put in my Camelback.

There is not a lot of water between Sedalia and Booneville, so make sure you fill up in Pilot Grove.

Kriss from Boonville on 4/1/2014 6:07:12 PM:
When you get to Boonville, feel free to stop by the High Street Victorian Bed & Breakfast and Tea room, and I'll be happy to refill your water for you.

On the western end...running water/fountains at trailheads in Clinton, Calhoun (up a small hill to trailhead), Windsor, Green Ridge, Sedalia, Pilot Grove, Boonville, New Franklin, Rocheport, Huntsdale, Hartsburg, and North Jefferson. After that on the eastern half I only ride once or twice a year but unless it has changes, there are less trailheads with water on the Eastern end. Anyone more familiar with the Eastern trailheads?

MAH from Blue Springs on 4/1/2014 8:34:38 PM:
Oops...on above post I meant McBaine trailhead and NOT Huntsdale. Also if you look on the Trip Planner and check water, it will also give you the trailheads with water and also some of the other water options at each stop.

Gary, I would scout out private businesses east of Jeff City for water since not many trailheads have water. I call it the "desert part" of the KT from Jeff City to about Treloar. Thats why everyone carries those big 70+ oz camelbacks.

Pseudio on 4/2/2014 4:17:44 PM:
Check that, from Jeff City to Marthasville for trailhead water. Over 70 miles.

Dawn Fredrickson, Katy Trail Coordinator on 4/3/2014 9:19:06 AM:
There is now water at the Tebbetts trailhead. Last fall, a water spigot was installed next to the restroom. Additionally, we are in the process of securing funding for a water spigot at the Mokane trailhead and hope to have it installed by the end of the year.

Trek on 4/3/2014 10:19:59 AM:
There is water at the city park shelter in Rhineland also. The trail passes just a few feet from the shelter....not a trailhead, but potable water right next to the trail.

Anon from kc-metro on 4/3/2014 11:23:45 AM:
In addition to the new trailhead taps, water can be found a the following places between Jeff City and Marthasville.

Jeff City - trailhead
Tebbetts - Turner/Katy Shelter
Mokane - in town, the market & bar-grill
Portland - café when open and near campground shack
Bluffton - honor outlet next to trail in season
Rhineland - trailside café
McKittrick - B&B/café
Hermann - quickstop south of trail
Treloar - café
Marthasville - inside trailhead restroom

Carry extra if possible.

Good idea, anon-kc, how about a DNR or private phone app that shows water, toilets, alternate locations and good food and drink locations on the KT?

MidSouth from Rogersville, MO on 4/12/2014 4:30:25 PM:
Not an app, but this website comes up fine on my phone and I can see the Towns % Services page and Mileage Chart page and the Trip Planner page just fine.

Anonymous on 4/13/2014 9:02:34 AM:
I doubt it come in up from Springfield and on the west KT.

MidSouth from Rogersville, MO on 4/13/2014 4:44:08 PM:
What does that say???

Don from Ellisville, MO on 4/13/2014 5:46:17 PM:
I always use this very website on my smart phone when riding the Katy. If I want to know what is coming up, I click on the Towns and Service link at the top. I don't think an app would add much.
