Went through this detour area this weekend. The detour is not marked well (esp when the sun is shading the signs). Ended up accidentally riding up the Hamburg trail for a bit before a nice cyclist told me to turn around and pointed out the detour. Several others were making the same mistake as I passed by.

I'd have to agree with this. Keep in mind that you'll want to make the sharpest turn you possibly can of the routes offered, both when going west and east. The trail just about doubles back upon itself - remember that and you should be fine.
