Several of us most recently completed a 3 day ride from Sedalia to St. Charles Oct 1-3. I have to say that I have found the Mokane Market to be the most unfriendly place on the entire trail and I have ridden various parts of the trail frequently.

The lady working behind the counter was not pleasant. We had an experience similar to others. Since there was no water at the trail head, we went to the Mokane Market to get food and water. They will sell you water but will not let you fill your bottle from the tap. This is the only place on the trail where I have ever been refused refused free tap water. I guess I could understand somewhat if we didn't purchase anything but after spending $5-$7 each on food and refreshments you would think they would throw in a few cents worth of tap water on the house.

Also be careful where you park your bike if you don't want a stern lecture. You must park against the brick portion of the building.

I won't be stopping at this store again. I'll have enough water and food that I can just keep on going to the next town where my money and my business is appreciated.

Next time stop at the Mokane Bar and Grill. Friendly folks, ample servings and I am sure you can fill your water bottles for free.

You can get a partial refill in the restroom sink, or you can dip your bottle in the toilet reservoir tank there; that water is clean until it hits the stool. :) They also sell bottled cold water out front.

I believe we stopped at the bar and grill when we went through Mokane
about a month ago. It was awesome! I was really hurting (I drug too
heavy of a tow behind trailer that day), but they had a great fish fry
for 5 or 10 bucks.

The barkeep probably filled my glass of water about 10 times, and, when
I ran my bank card (which was like 5 bucks for 4 beers), I put a tip on
there for him. Long story short, you can't add a tip after he runs the
card, so, instead of being upset with he, he was very friendly and he
told me not to worry about it since I didn't have cash. The locals in
there gave us looks (but who doesn't look at bikers in spandex funny),
but all in all, the employees there were very friendly.

I had a very similar experience with the Mokane Market, twice actually. The people were rude and basically made you want to leave immediately. They need to realize that they live in a town where all you do is watch the grass grow, and that the Katy Trail is a real source of revenue and is for all the other small towns on the trail. I will be traveling the trail in a month and plan to stock up in Tebbetts and ride through Mokane. I hope they enjoy not receiving my money.

My wife and I stopped in the market a couple of weeks ago and found the lady running the store to be very friendly. The language amoung some locals was quite salty (curse words) but the turkey sandwich on wheat was good.

Just went through this week and got the surly lady who has been mentioned. We bought $10 of ice cream, snacks and drinks and she was just a rude, unfriendly downer and good vibe thief. Made no sense. We'll go to the Bar & Grill next time for people who appreciate their own species. On the other hand, the older guys meeting in council over coffee by the front windows were wry and funny like the best of all small town wise men.

I've been there several times and never had a problem. I grew up in a small town, and they remind me of many places I remember growing up, and used when I lived in the country as an adult.

One thing I'm noticing, the descriptions of the lady at the Mokane Store on this site sometimes remind me of the Soup Nazi on Seinfeld. I think she's bringing a lot of business their way - people who read this site go there just to see what everyone is talking about. Ok, it's just a theory. I'll keep going there. I try to support as many businesses in these little towns as possible.

Wow, we were there last week and have nothing but great things to say about the market. I didn't ask for water, just used the sink faucet which filled my containers just fine. We bought a couple bags of ice, some ice cream, some sandwiches. No complaints, all good for us.

Country folks always welcome. We may not always get it right in Mokane, but we Mokanians have to stick together. Think you all know how that goes.

Just sent this out to a large group. All small town people who ride the katy trail. They will never get any of our bussiness at Mokane Market.

I am way more a country boy than any of these "townies" from Mokane, but they still see anyone coming off the trail as city slickers the town culture is against. Ironically, hospitality has become conditional, making them no different than Yankees from New York. But I am glad they have a Bar and Grill. The food is always good there. Hats off to the new owners.

Good business practices are good business practices in the country and in the city.

Being a decent human being is the same in the city and in the country.

I have worked with small rural communities for many, many years. Some of them want to grow. Some of them are perfectly content to die a slow death. Dying slowly seems less painful for them than change.

I'm not making judgments about Mokane...I'm just sayin'....

This place never gets my money again! Two years Ina row, hideous behavior from woman working there. Has real problem with polite people wanting to get water bottles filled as we spend our money there. Never again. I think billy summed it up quite well.

Kind of agree. She ain't up to par, but we are working on her. Recommend just stay away from her, it don't do you any good to get all worked up, when you are out there to enjoy the trail. I'll see what I can do to make Mokane a little more friendly.

Stop at the Mokane Bar & Grill! Awesome food and great customer service. They treat my husband and I wonderfully and I saw them fill other biker's bottles many times from the tap behind the bar. Great place!

We stopped and had lunch at the Mokane Market this past Saturday (10/20/12). The service was just fine and had a few deli sandwiches and picked up some other stuff to chew on for our ride. No complaint here. In fact, they even gave my buddy's daughter some quarters for the candy machine because we didn't have any change. Seems like a great place to grab a quick lunch and some snacks.

I think Mokane is wonderful, but I didn't like all the strippers hanging around the trailhead.

We had the exact same experience last week in Mokane at the Market. Terrible people, rude as can be and unfriendly. We left immediately and went over to the Bar & Grill, which was fantastic! Very friendly and great service! I guess, the woman at the Market hasn't learned much in all these years.
