We are planning on a St Louis to Pere Marquette then back to Grafton and on to St Charles with our final destination Jefferson City bike trip in Oct. Can we take the Grafton Ferry and catch the Katy Trail at the Machens trailhead? If so how? Also how far would this be from the ferry to Machens and how busy are the streets? Also, has anyone had any luck getting more than 4 bikes on Amtrak? Thanks for any info.

Actually there is no trailhead at Machens, the closest trailhead to Machens is at Black Walnut. The trail does go to Machens but you have to get there from the Black Walnut area and then turn around and go back. The trail from Machens to St. Charles is not yet open and the Grafton Ferry is closer to St. Charles then it is to Black Walnut. I would consider taking highways from the ferry into St. Charles and then jump on the trail were it is officially open and you can legally ride. It would also keep you from having to backtrack. Good luck!
