I was wondering are there any non-smoking casinos in KS and MO. I mean really no smoking at all.

Stayed here during the week and had a good experience. Secure bike parking and a cheap gambler-subsidized room rate, including dinner, made it very economical. Book direct online and follow the 'Play & Stay' option. The buffet was OK, definately not gourmet, but good for the price (free!). The casino itself is a disaster and we would advise all to stay away. Visualize people shuffling from machine to machine, oxygen tank in one hand, cigarette in the other - you have to see it to believe it. We left at 8am the following morning, just in time to see several serious "players" waking up in their cars in the car park to get back in for opening time (the casino closes between 5 and 8am). If you can shield your kids from this aspect, its a bargain place to stay at.

I am riding through to St. Louis and chose the Isle of Capri hotel because of its proximity to the trail. I have noticed a couple of comments about the quality of the dining. Is the food that bad? If so where does one get a good meal? Are te lodgings suitable?

Trek Biker from St. Joseph, MO on 10/12/2006 03:22 PM:
There are several good places to eat in downtown.....just south of the Missouri River bridge.

ET from Columbia on 10/12/2006 05:08 PM:
Depending on your budget, Glenn's cafe, in the Frederick Hotel, right by the MO River Bridge, is wonderful food, but pricey. There's also a very nice little Italian place on the main street with good pizza and pasta, called Cafe Napoli. For more plain fare, The Stein House has been there for decades serving standard family-type fare.

joplinbikegirl from Joplin on 10/12/2006 10:13 PM:
I agree, Glenn's cafe is good. Are you looking for someone to eat dinner with?

GC from Columbia, Mo. on 10/13/2006 07:29 AM:
Glenn's! Glenn's! Glenn's!

Arkie from Fort Smith, AR on 10/13/2006 04:52 PM:
Thanks for the suggestions guys. I will be arriving on Sunday afternoon and would love to have company for dinner joplinbikegirl. That is if you don't mind dining with a petroleum engineer. Given the recent run up in oil/gas prices I have been sort of persona-non-grata.

Alright Arkie. I would like to dine with a petroleum engineer. Dad is a civil engineer so I think I can carry on a conversation without blaming you for the recent gas prices.

Tracy from Overland Park on 10/13/2006 08:23 PM:
Arkie and Joplin - Is this a dinner for two or are you open to inviting other diners?

joplinbikegirl from Joplin on 10/13/2006 08:34 PM:
I think I will let Arkie make that call if he would.

Tracy from Overland Park on 10/14/2006 01:49 PM:
I will make other plans.

My husband and I just stayed at the Isle of Capri in Boonsville. The hotel itself is brand new and very nice and clean, the room was very comfortable, but I must admit that the food was not good at all. The buffet is overpriced and doesn't taste good and there are 2 other places to eat at the boat and they are also both bad. We ended up eating one meal at the Trailside Cafe in Rocheport and we ate breakfast one morning at Bobbers and these were both good.

Robert Stinnett from Boonville, MO on 04/05/2007 11:43 PM:
Buffet is awful unless you like heat-lamp food filled with grease and fat. I suggest Glenn's or Napoli if you are eating in Boonville.

John from Oskaloosa, Iowa on 07/07/2007 08:03 AM:
Kind of off the subject of food, but has anybody ever come out ahead in that casino? Or even heard of anyone who did? I have been there probably 6 times and never hit anything on the slots, not even a small win! I think I have finally figured out to stay away from the place.

GC from Columbia, Mo. on 07/07/2007 08:33 AM:
Don't fool yourself. The casino, and by that I mean ALL casinos, always win in the end. They work on the principal that you may win a little, but they will win more. Having said that, I still go there and have a good time, I just don't expect to make a killing there.

eileen from florissant mo on 08/01/2007 09:43 PM:
We had a good experience at the Palace Restaurant. It is just down from Steins's, right on the corner by the little pioneer park (or whatever that was). The Palace was clean, affordable, friendly. They kept the water glasses topped and had great cole slaw. My husband enjoyed the gyro, and i the reuben. We saw other diners with beautiful salads. We'll visit again.

Cliff from Edwardsville Kansas on 08/02/2007 09:19 AM:
If it's not to late I would suggest staying at the Comfort Inn and Suites on Main Street in Old St. Charles. It's at the south end of Main not to far from the Casino. The trail runs right behind the Hotel. The will let you take your bikes to the room and will store your luggage for you while you are on the trail. You can leave your car in the lot on the south side of the building. We were gone for two days and when we returned around noon they let us go ahead get back in our room so we could take a shower before going to lunch on Main street. There are several good places to eat up and down Main steet and it's a really neat place to spend an afternoon or evening. Have a great ride.

Sure. Call Karla Kluck at Isle of Capri at 660-882-1280. She is handling slot tournaments!

the food was horrible.... kinda like a sirloin stockade... but a step down believe it or not...

Ron from Portland, Mo. on 08/10/2008 01:31 AM:
I've eaten there several times and always found the food to be delicious, especially for the price you can't beat it!!

Captain Kirk from Fayette, MO on 09/08/2008 03:16 PM:
It was too bad that Matt had a bad experience and then had to take the time to create a topic due to his bad experience. I believe that people that find it necessary to comment on bad experiences without being asked have many bad experiences in their life due to a bad attitude in general. Matt, don't take it personally, this is just an observation. As someone that lives near the Isle of Capri and eats there on average at least once a month I have found it a delight to dine there and the food is really good. My favorite is the Fri and Sat seafood buffet where you can get the all you can eat crab legs. Matt, come on back and try the Isle again, they might surprise you.

Beautiful rooms at the hotel, food was great and you can't beat the location...right on the trail. Check their website for room specials. We got a great deal. Very accomodating to bicyclists and the casino was alot of fun.

Did everything smell of cigarette smoke like in vegas? That is the only reason why I have not

gone yet.

Biker from Farmington, MO on 07/02/2008 11:56 AM:
Stayed there recently in a non-smoking room, which was just fine. The casino portion allows smoking. You can smell it a bit in the buffet area, which also allows smoking. There are pros & cons in staying there (and these are just my opinion). CONS: 1) It's got a styrofoam aesthetic to it (Capri is in Europe, not the Caribbean, by the way). 2) It's hard to get someone at the front desk, which is weird. Making reservations wasn't a one-call kinda thing. I had to leave a voice-mail message a few times, to get a couple of my questions answered. 3) Well, I gotta confess. I'm not really a gambler, and it was kinda sad to see how many seniors were throwing away their money with both hands. One at the bar asked, "Any luck?" I said I wasn't really into gambling, and he said, "Good for you. I wish I could stop." Ultra-depressing. 4) The buffet was kind of average, to me. 5) There's no room service either, which was kind of a bummer. 6) Annoying parrot voice announces elevator floors. Bleh! There are plenty of things to commend Isle of Capri, though: 1) It's right on the trail! That alone is worth gold. 2) It's easy to get a taxi. 3) The rooms are bright, cheery, clean, and the shower's got pretty good pressure. Toiletries are great. Coffee's pretty good. 4) And the mediocre buffet? Hey, it's open, easy and accessible, which earns brownie points with me. Food was good enough for this chick! 5) Service was pretty nice, too. The staff are friendly. 6) They let you store your bikes on the premises, also a great thing. I'd probably stay somewhere else again for a different experience, but I salute Isle of Capri for being Katy-friendly. Shoot, maybe I would stay there again.

The Isle of Capri offers a FREE shuttle to the hotels along I-70! (Tips are appreciated.) All you have to do is roll in and ask. This is true even though the Isle has its own hotel. The free shuttle also goes to the other I-70 businesses, like the truck stops and fast food joints. It runs M-F from about 3 p.m. to about 2:30 a.m., and weekends from 11 a.m. to about 2:30 a.m.

They also offer a FREE bike locker so you can explore the town.

Not Happy from St Louis on 02/18/2008 06:24 PM:
Fun seekers beware.

This casino and hotel is not a place to have adult fun. We had 15 friends that came to the Isle of Capri from all over Missouri to celebrate a 60th birthday party. Here are the issues:

One of my friends was stopped and questioned on his way into the casino at 3:15 in the afternoon after his 2 hour drive up from St Louis and had not consumed any alcohol. Another 60 year young lady friend was escorted off by three casino officials after a total of 3 beers at approx 5:30 or 6:00 after arriving and checking in at 2:30. She offered to take a sobriety check, breathalizer or other recourse she might have to prove she was not intoxicated. Just celebrating small jackpots with the other 6 ladies/friends that were gathered around the slot machine they were playing together. They offered none not even a warning. Well we all left the casino after that and ended up celebrating my friends birthday in our rooms. Comps, I don't think so. Between the tables and slots I ran over two thousand dollars thru and the players club offered me something at the deli.(Wow) There is no bar except the casino bar that I could find so there is no other night life to speak of except dining at the complex. This is a very strict casino where laughter and celebration is a sure sign of intoxication and therefore a sure way to be kicked out. I was not located where this happened and these are the reports shared with me after the fact from the friends that were present. Rooms are OK and my frineds that did eat said the food was good. Machines are tight, some of the dealers were fun others may have been machines I could not tell. We will never go back and I would not recommend this facility to anyone wanting to have a good time.

Well Not, I think it's all just bad Karma. That seems to be life.....sometimes ya have a good day on the trail....and sometimes it rains and ya have a flat. But don't stop riding. Brush yourself off and get back on the bike my friend. My last trip to the Isle of Capri landed a hundred bucks on a 10 dollar investment (dollar slot machine on the end of the row) the night before a wonderful ride to Jefferson City and back the next day. I felt very fortunate to be able to reinvest my money at Glen's and the Hotel Frederick to help support the local Boonville economy.

Buffet is very bad. Price is expensive for a very poor selection. The salad bar had almost nothing on it and when I asked for some tomatoes I was told they didn't have any -- no tomatoes on a salad bar? Of course there wasn't any vegetables except for some peas that had all sorts of stuff "mixed" in with them that had fallen in.

The other food was of such poor quality that my wife and I finally had enough and asked to see a manager. After waiting for about 15 minutes we got our money back, but it wasn't easy.

George and Kathy Dobbelaere from Shawnee, Kansas on 10/17/2006 11:42 PM:
I agree with you completely. The food was not good at all. The funny thing is, the Isle of Capri in Kansas City is exactly the same, they also have the same yukky food.

We have been goint to Boonville since they opened and have always enjoyed there buffet but the last year it has been very poor with quality and selection. Yesterday I took a friend of mine and was so embarressed as the food was not only poorly fixed with very little selection but when I asked for a few of your usual items they said didnt have any. Even your ice cream area did not have any toppings.

Guess that is the last time we visit Boonville.

PS You used to have a great buffet

Isle of Capri just opened their hotel. We stayed there last Tuesday nite. Let us take our bikes right up to the room. The staff was very proud of the new accomodations. Very nice.

Chris Fields from Springfield, Mo on 08/10/2006 09:22 PM:
Isle of Capri's new hotel is very nice! I've Stayed there right before they opened it to the public and loved it. The rooms are very nice. You have a private safe, a large flat screen T.V. with cable, a coffee maker with gourmet coffees and a large bath/shower with lots of extra little bath shampoos and soaps. The room I stayed in didn’t have a fridge or anything. I think they want you to enjoy the casino and the restaurants. The staff is very friendly. There are vending machines, an Ice machine. I loved the room and plan to visit them again for two nights this week!

Stayed at the Casino finishing the first day of riding. After 74 miles we were ready to relax. The rooms were large and nice, but you did not get many extras for the price. The trail runs right up to the front door so they could not get any closer. The buffet was nearly $20 per person, way over priced for poor food. Breakfast was not any better. They knew they had you so they charged what they wanted. I will never stay here again!

Jim from Oklahoma on 07/14/2006 09:58 PM:
We stuffed ourselves at the casino's buffet for about $17 per person --tax included. It was good but overpriced. There was a steak and hamburger cafe on Boonville's main downtown drag but didn't seem appealing. A small Italian eatery on that same street appeared promising but was closed on the Sunday and Monday that we passed through. A very basic fish shack was a couple blocks on down the street (west?).

M from Glasgow, Mo on 07/19/2006 08:56 PM:
The "basic fish shack" is Mississippi Fish Shack, next door to Thespian Hall on Main Street. The place isn't fancy, but they sure know how to fry a mean fillet. During my first visit, the owner brought out a round of fried pickles for everyone in the restaurant to try, free of charge. I wasn't so sure about fried pickles, but they were suprisingly tasty. I'm not sure what their hours are, but if you're in the area, I'd definitely recommend it!

Iowa Biker on 07/23/2006 04:21 PM:
What I still can't get over is that they asked us to park our bikes at the bike rack that had no ramp! We had to lift our bikes (that were heavy because we were biking self-contained) onto a pedestal! Typical of a business that doesn't promote healthy living. It probably never occurred to them to put in a ramp. Can you imagine their parking lot having a curb all the way around it?

Its worth the 4mi? ride back from the Katy Round Hse if their restaurant is closed. Bike rack directly out front. Just be certain to have a headlamp or light for coming back. PS...crossing the bridge @ night you are blinded by headlights, so be careful.....
